What Is A Thread Rolling Machine?

Sep 01, 2025

A thread rolling machine is a multi-functional cold extrusion forming machine tool. Within its rolling pressure range, it can perform thread rolling, straight knitting, and oblique knitting on workpieces in a cold state; roll spur gears, helical gears, and helical splines; straighten, reduce diameter, burnish, and perform various forming rolls. The machine has a safe and reliable electro-hydraulic actuator and control system, allowing each work cycle to be selected in manual, semi-automatic, and automatic modes.

Thread rolling cold rolling is an advanced non-cutting machining process that effectively improves the internal and surface quality of workpieces. The radial compressive stress generated during processing significantly improves the fatigue strength and torsional strength of the workpiece, making it an ideal process that is highly efficient, energy-saving, and low-consumption.

The principle of cold rolling small-module involute splines on a thread rolling machine is as follows: L and R are a pair of involute rolling wheels with identical parameters, mounted on the two main shafts of the thread rolling machine, and can rotate synchronously in the same direction under the drive of the transmission mechanism. The R wheel can be driven by a hydraulic cylinder for radial feed motion, and the L wheel can be adjusted to coincide with the indentation of the R wheel on the surface of the workpiece P. Workpiece P is clamped and positioned using two center holes. Adjusting the fixture allows for axial movement of the workpiece. Under load, it can swing by an angle Φ around an axis passing through point O and parallel to the machine tool spindle, ensuring the workpiece remains in a free rolling state with the two rolling wheels during cold rolling, while also facilitating workpiece clamping.

The structural dimensions, form and position tolerances, and technical requirements of the rolling wheels are formulated with reference to thread rolling wheels and cylindrical measuring gears. The common normal length or span M of the rolling wheels is calculated based on spline data in gear manufacturing. The required material can be Cr12MoV (hardness 59-62 HRC).
